Sunday 21 September saw the latest RYA Sailibility Scotland taster day take place at Lochaber Sailing Club in Fort William. The weather was on our side and it turned out to be a lovely day for sailing, with all particepents acknowledging that it was a wonderful experience.
In the development of this event, there were some concerns regarding the potentially low number of participants, although every organisation with whom I made contact was very positive about the idea. After notifying local education establishments and organisations for people with disabilities by means of a mail-out and posters, I as usual followed up these initial advertisements by making telephone calls. As has typically been the case when organising these taster sessions, I encountered positive responses, with most organisations recognising this as a wonderful potential opportunity for their client base. This was accompanied, however, by the usual stumbling blocks such as clashing dates and lack of staffing and transport to support people to access this activity
Despite these difficulties, ten participants came along on the day. The two Lochaber Challengers and a Wayfarer were used for the event, and everyone appeared to enjoy the experience of helming and learning to operate the sails. Adrian Hope and the club members were all extremely helpful and supportive, from those working in the kitchen to the shore and rescue boat crews. A big thank you is extended to everyone who provided support and encouragement.
As usual, the RYA instructors were enthusiastic and motivated, and worked in tandem with the Lochaber club members to make the day run smoothly. Lindsay, Finn and Alex worked effectively with a diverse group of participants and ensured that everyone had a safe and enjoyable day. Two of the instructors were new to sailing Challengers and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This was an additional but important outcome of the day, as if mainstream sailors have the opportunity to discover that Challengers are fun to sail whilst also being accessible, they will be more inclined to spread the word and support our work.
Several of Sunday’s participants expressed a strong desire to return to the club to learn more about sailing, and left their names and contact details with Murine Macdonald who is keen to repeat the event in the new year. This was particularly encouraging, as it increases the likelihood of sustainability following our events. All in all, this was a very successful day in a highly supportive club. I am hopeful that several of the participants will continue to enjoy sailing at the Lochaber club following this event.
Next event will be at Loch Winoch on the 11th of October, where the arrangements are well on the way for another suscfull opportunity to get on the water.
