Learn2Sail - Royal Forth Yacht Club

Royal Forth OnBoard Club works in partnership with local Active School Coordinator and RYAS to introduce 335 youngsters to sailing this Easter

Learn2Sail is an initiative between Jessie Dahl, Active School Coordinator for Leith cluster, RYA Scotland, Royal Forth Yacht Club in Granton.

In 2010 Jessie Dahl, Active School Coordinator for Leith and Granton cluster was successful in obtaining Awards for All funding and worked with Angie Sword, RYA Scotland Development officer to design Learn2Sail.

This programme not only gave youngsters the opportunity to try sailing through a taster session but also to continue sailing over a 4 session block.

Volunteers were also recruited and trained in specific jobs which vried from rigging boats, issuing sailing gear to photography.

In 2010 24 youngsters attended the regular sessions but many were unable to get spaces so in 2011 48 places were available but even after these were full there was a long waiting list.

Instructors from RYAS Club Coaching Team were brought in to run the sessions using the clubs equipment.

Six sailors from last year’s group joined RFYC and one young sailor, Dylan Harcus won the clubs ‘Cadet of the Year’ award. Dylan is about to train as an assistant instructor.

On Friday 22nd April each group invited their parents and friends along to the prize giving where there was a slide show of photos brought together by two of the volunteers and certificates and a ‘crème egg’ medal were presented. As all of the youngsters were keen to keep sailing information was provided about opportunities in their local area.

Lewis Hazlett commented‘ My capsize was the best and worst bit but I can't wait to sail again!’

Thanks go to all involved for making Learn2Sail a success for the second year.
