Moray RIB Rendezvous - 20th August 2011

A brief outline of the concept and the delivery of a RIB event in the Moray Firth.

Moray Firth RIB Rendezvous

The idea was simple, to get local power boaters together and

promote both safe and responsible boat driving. To deliver this concept we had several RYA powerboat instructors and a marine biologist on the trip. It was also important that the day involved people from different age groups and areas of power boating.

The destination.

After seeking permission to use Whiteness Head it was

identified as a suitable meeting point for the following reasons

1) Different as access restricted normally

2) Ideal place to talk about wildlife and best practice

3) Safe refuge with road access if required

4) Facilities as required supplied by Nairn Sailing Club

The day.

Weather was sunny and the wind was ‘fresh’  HW was at 16.40 Due to wind direction we had a wind over tide situation however after assessment all boats continued with ease.

The Participants

Boats had signed up from Lossiemouth Findhorn and Fortrose.  Crewed with a mixture of experienced and inexperienced to ensure safe passage in all we had 2 Motorboats, 10 RIBs, 32 Persons - Ages from 7 to over 50! Representatives from Scouting, Sailing clubs, commercial operators and inshore rescue crew.

Outcome.

Without exception all had a wonderful experience, which

enhanced their boating skills through the conditions and instruction available.Widened their knowledge of the local area and best practice while enjoying our sport.

Onshore presentation

After lunch we all pulled up a chair, outside, and enjoyed a

very informative presentation by Deborah Benham. Marine Biologist.  During this talk we learned about wildlife in

the area including seas and dolphins, and most importantly how we should be behaving around such wildlife.

Conclusion

A very worthwhile day which has brought together

powerboaters from different backgrounds and given them all something to take away from the event. There has been lots of interest in finding out more about the schemes involving wildlife and how best to promote them within their own organisations. Powerboat handling opportunities under instruction were also

taken and peoples skills have improved, again making the waters safer for all.

Costs

All fuel costs were taken on by the participants, food was

bring your own, facilities courtesy of Nairn Sailing Club and the presenters fees were covered by Findhorn Marina Training Centre.
