Making the Move: Junior to Youth

Making the move from Junior Class to Youth Class is often the most important decision you will take in your sailing career. If you make the wrong decision you can find yourself stuck in class that does not suit your personal situation and may result in you not reaching your potential so it is important to take your time over the decision.

There are a number of key things to consider when looking at moving into a Youth Class.

Personal Preference

Which class do you want to sail, single or double handed, asymmetric or conventional spinnaker?

Physical Characteristics

Size and weight are key to being competitive in a sailing class and as such should be considered when choosing a Youth Class. You must also consider the next step to Olympic Level and whether you will be suitable in the future for the Olympic Classes.

Location and Training Partners

It is important to be able to have high quality training outside of squad camps so consideration of the other skilled sailors in your area may also be an important factor.

Goals and Aspirations

If sailors are looking to progress and medal at events such as the ISAF Youth Games it is important to ensure the class you move into is currently an accepted class.

Planning the Move

Sailors intending to move classes must start thinking about moving 12-18 months before their age or size requires them to do so.

Trying it out

If you are torn between more than one type of boat get out on the water and try it out. It is crucial that you have a good understanding of the new boat before you need to get results in the class.

Class Open Training

Get involved in the class open training. It offers a great opportunity to learn class specific skills whilst still in Junior Class Squads.

Know the Selection Process

Get acquainted with the selection process for the class you are moving into. It is crucial that you know exactly what selection events you need to attend to get noticed.
